CHAIRS by Rosalind Dallas.

It’s hard to visualise any kind of solitude in the centre of Glasgow never mind try to photograph it, but this is exactly what photographer Rosalind Dallas has created.   Dallas wanted to convey “an intense feeling of loneliness” and the project came to Rosalind simply by observing the environment around her.

Inspired by the cinematography of Sofia Coppola’s work and the isolation of Francesca Woodman, the images appear to be mid-scene, as if someone has just left or is to arrive, the human presence still lingering.  What’s more intriguing is that Dallas chose some of the Glasgow’s busiest locations, yet she makes them feel as though they are deserted and longing to be occupied.

In a feeling echoed by most photographers undertaking an abstract project like this Rosalind says “Most of the time when I tell people that I'm shooting a project on chairs they don't understand the appeal. When they see my images, however, they begin to understand that a chair can be so many things. A chair can be a piece of art, a beautiful sculpture or a symbol of seclusion.”

Rosalind is based in Glasgow and you can see more of "Chairs" on her website

  1. Hi, I think they are great pictures on their own, the light and the composition is great, i don't though get the feeling that they have had any human contact. Maybe an empty plate, an empty drinks glass, a jacket left behind or a hand bag, or a ticket on the floor, or a well flicked through metro lying around. the images look too clean for me.
